Obamacare Health Care BillWith the new Obamacare Health Care Bill coming up, many wonder what they to do with their existing plan. Should you keep it? replace it? Can you save money?

On January 1st 2014 all small business health insurance plans will change to follow the Exchange plans, whether you want it or not. The plans will have four different levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

There are a few exceptions:

1) if your plan is old enough and had no recent changes if can be grandfathered which means that you would not have to change your plan to model the exchange plan. The advantage could be significant, especially if you have lower rates or better benefits.

2) You can in many cases ask for an early renewal of your plan which means you will renew in December 2013 instead of your regular anniversary date in 2014 and because of that your plan will remain the same until December 2014. That gives you time to consider your options. To do that, contact your broker or your insurance provider and ask for an early renewal. If you are skeptic about the success of Obamacare Health Care Bill that can give you time to see if it is successful before you consider an eventual change.

So what makes sense? What should you do? The Health Care Bill or Obamacare was designed to create a level playing field, allowing employers and consumers to make an easier choice. It was also designed to offer multiple insurance carriers to small employers who could not under the current rules. On the other hand, your current plan might have coverage or pricing more favorable to you and your company.

What should you do if you decide to switch to an exchange plan? You can access Covered California’s website at www.coveredca.com and learn about the plans, pricing, and where to find a certified Broker allowed to sell the exchanges.
